AN ANALYSIS INTO THE IMPACT OF STANDARDS ON THE OPERATION OF SLOVENIAN COMPANIES
COSYLAB
Cosylab is among the technologically most advanced companies in Slovenia.
But different, often elevated risks also accompany high technology. Following
and implementing standards are therefore the daily, irreplaceable activities
which enable Cosylab among other to successfully enter international markets
with its products.
In the last two decades, Cosylab has become the world’s leading provider of
control systems for nuclear accelerators. Using its own technology, it designs
and develops various cutting-edge devices, from optical and radio telescopes,
fusion reactors, to cancer therapy systems. The company employs over 200
engineers and scientists with sites in six countries – Sweden, Switzerland,
USA, Japan, China and Slovenia. The company was set up in 2001 by a group of
former researchers of the Jozef Stefan Institute (IJS), and is led by its founder,
Mark Pleško. For the last 15 years, the company has been achieving an annual
growth rate of more than 15%.
Cosylab is a company that clearly reflects the development of standardization
in the area of medical devices. Patient safety has become increasingly important.
With cutting-edge technology, the responsibility for possible risks and
accidents has been transferred almost exclusively onto the product – in this
case onto medical devices. Cosylab’s products have won ISO 9001, ISO 14971
and IEC 62304 certifications, with the company experts regularly participating
in the development of new standards at the international level. Standardization
enables Cosylab to make its C-TCS medical device accessible to wider markets,
therefore being interoperable and allowing almost complete control of risks
(Cosylab, 2019).
CYBER SECURITY AND ISKRAEMECO
Cyber security is developing fast and becoming increasingly important for both
the public and private sphere. For now, standardization of cyber security is
catching up too slowly with the fast development of new software, and the risks
