AN ANALYSIS INTO THE IMPACT OF STANDARDS ON THE OPERATION OF SLOVENIAN COMPANIES
facto standards result from marketplace domination of a large company, which
dictated trends in the entire sector.
De facto standards are considered to have evolved through the choice of the
marketplace, not at the discretion of an official authority. Contrary to them, de jure
standards have been developed through cooperation of several stakeholders and
official organizations for standardization, and are therefore officially recognized.
This research deals exclusively with de jure standards.
A technically more detailed classification of standards is guided by areas within which
individual standard codifies specific policies. From this point of view, standards can be divided
into the following groups:
1 Terminology and reference standards define the common language and definitions
for easier and more efficient communication between various stakeholders;
2 Measurement standards describe properties, define describing methods,
measures and evaluation of product attributes for an effective development;
3 Quality and reliability standards define the acceptability of a product or
service according to the criteria of functionality, efficiency, care for health,
and security;
4 Interoperability standards determine the properties that the technology of
a product needs to have in order to be (both physically and functionally)
compatible with other products, processes and systems;
5 Configuration standards determine the ranges, numbers, shapes and properties,
such as size and quality, in order to promote economies of scale and boost
users’ trust, which may contribute to reduction in the diversity between goods
or services (Featherson, Ho, Brevignon-Dodin, O’Sullivan, 2016).
