AN ANALYSIS INTO THE IMPACT OF STANDARDS ON THE OPERATION OF SLOVENIAN COMPANIES

Statistical analysis points out that there are also differences between the
groups as regards their impact on exports (Kurskal-Wallis H Test, P=0.018,
N=186), while the Mann-Whitney test with alpha adjusted at 0.0085 has not
found any differences of statistical significance. There are also statistically
significant differences between the groups as regards additional costs incurred
by companies due to standardization (Kurskal-Wallis H Test, P=0.020, N=186).
A more detailed insight statistically confirms the differences between the
medium and large enterprises (Mann-Whitney U Test, P=0.002, N=105).
Differences between the groups in terms of enabling economies of scale are
also statistically significant (Kurskal-Wallis H Test, P=0.032, N=186), with
statistically significant differences appearing again between the medium and
large enterprises (Mann-Whitney U Test, P=0.006, N=105): the medium
enterprises agree less with the claim that standardization enables
economies of scale than the large enterprises.

An analysis of the in-depth interviews shows that development professionals
are normally responsible for purchasing standards, whose main concern is to
obtain the standard at the right time. For them, therefore, the language and the
price of a standard are not decisive to make the purchasing decisions.

On the other hand, several interviewees shared the opinion that standards
should be translated into Slovene. In particular those with mandatory use
should have a corresponding Slovene version, as they are usually used by
a larger group of people. Where there is lack of sufficient financial resources
to translate all mandatory standards, at least the translation of the terminology
of each standard should be assured.

It also seems pointless to the interviewees that the purchase is separated
from the choice of language: every standard should be written in two columns
(Slovenian and English); hence only the purchase of a bilingual version of standard
would make sense and be obligatory. Sometimes, however, the English version of
standard is more useful as it makes international cooperation easier.
