The relationship between certification bodies and companies is very complex.
Companies rely on certification bodies, because they also help them much
better and skilfully in the process of implementing standards. They can rely on
the help of technically qualified staff, and even more decisive is the fact that
companies, in collaboration with a certification body, can properly prepare
themselves for the final criteria to obtain certification. Whereas certification
bodies will most probably not be directly and decisively involved in the process
of buying a standard. At the decision-making level, companies will normally act
autonomously. The important role of assessors is mainly demonstrated in
companies’ decision as to which organization they choose for additional
training on standards (see Chart 13).
